Does anyone knows anything about the guy with a dog who sits begging outside the Co-op? ("Can you spare any change mate?") No one ever seems to give him anything, and he constantly gets moved on by the staff - but he always seems to come back.

Just worries me. If he's genuinely in need, then something should be done (this afternoon I was tempted to ask him what he needs, and then go in and buy it for him. But I'm not prepared to give him dosh if he's just going to buy booze with it.)

Please don't give him anything or get him anything.
Let the staff know he is there and let them deal with it.

The staff know he's there, but apparently can't do much: they get him to move, then as soon as their backs are turned, he comes back. He's been there regularly for about a month now.

he's a nuisance. Asked me on the way in and I said no, asked me twice on the way out despite a very clear "no" on the first time of asking.

Difficult, isn't it? He's presumably there because he needs something (whether it actually is money or food, or whether he just has a compulsion to be annoying.) Either way, he needs some kind of help.

(Maybe he's a reporter who's testing out the old adage about Yorkshire thriftiness wink ;) )

@peter4361 Not so long ago when I visited the co-op he was kicking off with co-op staff soon after that altercation police turned up and moved him on.

He may very well need help and I understand your concern. Pestering co-op customers and kicking off with staff isn't a way to get it. There are plenty of charities that offer help and support to people in need.
The co-op even has a collection point for the local food bank!
