Silsden goes to Sierra Leone

In 2017 we are joining with Mission Direct to take our third team from Silsden to Sierra Leone in West Africa.

The dates are 8th – 23rd April 2017

The two-week trip is to help build community projects in this country of many needs. Previous projects have included; children’s homes, hospitals, clinics and schools.

The trip is open for anyone aged 11 and over and will cost £1750 a person. The cost will include flights, visa, insurance, transport, accommodation and food and drink.

You don’t have to have a building skill to join the team, we work with local builders and you will be there to help them. Teams often make and lay bricks, paint and decorate. In the afternoons we join community groups and organise activities for children in orphanages, help old people and run play activities for disabled children.

We will be planning some fundraising activities to raise funds to support people interested and the projects.

If you are not able to go perhaps you would consider sponsoring someone to take part in this trip.
We will be holding an information evening in October and will be advertising the date for this meeting.

We would love to hear from you if you are interested or want to find out more.

Please contact Steve Loryman on 01535 658063 steve.loryman@missiondirect.org

... or meet us at our information evening in the Kings Arms, Silsden on Monday October 31st at 7:30pm.

COBBYDALERS SUPPORTING SIERRA LEONE VISIT
Silsden supporter, Philip Smith, is one of a team of volunteers from the locality making the trip to Sierra Leone, West Africa from April 8th to 23rd. Philip is part of a team, led by Derek Smithson on behalf on “Mission Direct”. Mission Direct support a number of football teams in Sierra Leone. Youngsters in the country are passionate about football, some even digging a trench across a road so they have a flat area on which to play.
The Silsden Volunteers includes local Minister, Reverend David Griffiths, a West Brom Supporter by birth, who now watches Bradford City and The Cobbydalers. David has led several “services” at the Cobbydalers ground including carol services and the 1914 Memorial Service, which honoured the Silsden Footballers who died at The Somme. David is joined by his wife, Susan and children, Matthew, Andrew and Hannah. The team will be staying in Freetown for the first week and then at the coast for the second. There are still 5 places available for volunteers(@£1,650. (Contact Derek Smithson 01535 656933 for further details.)
The team are spending the first week building at Waterloo Hospital and the second week helping to finish off a medical centre along with some Italian volunteers who are taking three local nurses back to Italy for two years of further training.
The volunteers came down to the recent Cobbydalers recent game against Widnes FC and were given two sets of Silsden AFC kit and some Junior Kits as well, the third time the club have supported a visit.
If any local teams have spare sets of kit or individual players have football boots in reasonable condition we be grateful for any further donations. Adults or boys and girls.
Details on Mission Direct.
